Amsterdam on foot
Just a few steps from the door of our Inn Old Amsterdam towards the east, you find yourself in one of the oldest residential districts of Amsterdam, famous for its new buildings and renovation. The Oude Kerk, built in about 1250, is on the edge of the district. The Flea Market on the Waterlooplein and the Muziektheater of Amsterdam, with a varied programme of opera and ballet, are just a little further on. |
|
A few steps from the door to the west, you'll find Chinatown (on and around the Zeedijk), the red light district, also known as the Wallen, and the small hidden church, ''Ons Lieve Heer op Solder" (Our Lord in the Attic).
A few steps from the door to the north you will find the NEMO Technology Museum, the new music building on the IJ and our pride and joy, the extremely hospitable Public Library of Amsterdam. |
|
A few steps to the south take you to the Dam.
The Dam is one of the oldest spots in Amsterdam. In the thirteenth century, fishermen living along the banks of the Amstel built a bridge across the Amstel River. That bridge gave the Dam its name. The Dam is now surrounded by a shopping area with large streets of shops and classic brand names. But a little further on you'll also find a very fashionable shopping area, established in nine small streets: an absolute hotspot for alternative shoppers. There are second-hand clothes shops, vintage shops, designer boutiques and brand names of trendy clothes. There are a number of theatres in the Nes, a narrow side street off the Dam. |

Amsterdam by boat
Every two years we still take a boat trip through the canals of Amsterdam ourselves. Nowadays there is the extra attraction of a trip around the new residential areas in the north of Amsterdam. We think that you haven.t really seen Amsterdam unless you've had a trip on the water. There are large and small Amsterdam businesses to choose from. A random choice would include trips by water taxi. Rederij Lovers has developed a selection of different boat trips, including the Museum boat, which passes by the various museums of Amsterdam. It is also possible to hire a traditional saloon boat privately. The place to embark is a 10 minute walk from our Inn Old Amsterdam. |
